Richard Hodnet Danahy's Obituary
Richard Hodnet Danahy, 82, of Plaistow, NH passed away peacefully on September 2 after his battle with cancer.
He was married for 54 years to the love of his life, Kathleen White Danahy, formerly of North Andover. He was preceded by his parents John J. Danahy and Rita Daly Danahy; his brother John and wife Patricia Danahy; his sister Donna Danahy White; his niece Maura J. Danahy; and his brother-in-law William White.
He is survived by his brothers James of Orange County, CA; Patrick and wife Anne of Methuen, MA; and Michael and spouse Sal of Juno Beach, FL, as well as his brother-in-law, Walter White of Methuen, MA. He is also survived by his son Shaun and wife Maureen and three grandchildren Mary Margaret, Kevin Patrick, and John Joseph, of Louisville, KY; and his daughter Colleen and husband Jess Mader and two granddaughters Audrey and Kelsey, of Tewksbury, MA. Also, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was born in Lawrence, MA on November 24, 1940. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed in Hawaii. He started work initially for the city of Lawrence under Alderman Dick Remming. After living with his family in Florida for ten years, he returned home and worked with his grammar school friends at the Greater Lawrence Technical High School as a supervisor of the maintenance and custodial staffs and the outside grounds crew for many years. He retired and loved to travel. He went everywhere with his wife: spending winters in Florida, fishing with his brothers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and visiting family in Kentucky. He also enjoyed woodworking, making handcrafted gifts for family and friends. He was in great shape and loved going to the gym with his 80’s Workout Club and with Big Mike every day.
He greatly enjoyed spending time with his Irish family—his aunts and uncles and countless cousins, celebrating at Salisbury Beach with plenty of food and lots of stories, Irish humor, and songs. “We hate to see you go, we had to see you go…”. Family and friends meant everything. He will be missed by all, but treasured memories will last forever.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at 11:30 AM at St. Michael Church, 196 Main St. North Andover, MA, 01845. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery, 177 Salem Street, North Andover, MA, 01845.
