Tina M. Mahoney's Obituary
Tina (don't call her Albertine...) Mahoney passed away surrounded by her family on September 29, 2019 at High Pointe House hospice care in Haverhill, MA, after a sudden illness. Born Albertine Marie Buyck on February 18, 1939, in Lawrence, MA, to parents Charles and Albertine Buyck, and preceded in death by her two older brothers, Sonny & Louie, she graduated from St. Mary's High School, Lawrence in 1956. Tina later worked at Merrimack College as administrative assistant to the Economics Department and then Registrar's Office until her retirement in 1999.
While working at her uncle's doughnut shop after high school, she met Mass. State Trooper Edward A. "Buz" Mahoney, from Tower Hill, Lawrence. After a 3-year engagement, they married in April 1964 at St. Mary's Church in Lawrence and built a house in North Andover. Their four children, Dan, Jim, Kathy and John, came in 8 years to fill their home and their lives with love.
Tragically, she was widowed on November 21, 1976 when Buz was killed in a traffic accident. Tina raised her 4 children with the assistance of family, friends and community, while selflessly giving everything she had to whomever needed it, whether it be family, friends, St. Michael's Parish and School, St. Mary's Parish, Merrimack College, St. John's Prep, innumerable soccer teams, basketball teams, softball teams, fencing teams, bowling teams (hers), or driving friends and neighbors to doctors’ visits and church, and visiting people in the hospital. She never forgot a birthday and every one of her many friends and relatives could count on receiving a handwritten card from Tina and her attendance at every wedding, baby shower, bridal shower, graduation, birthday, etc. Her family was everything to her. She was also a Eucharistic Minister for 20 years for St. Michael's Church, sat weekly adoration for years, and was one of the “church ladies” who volunteered to clean the church on Mondays. Through her children and their friends, there are many honorary Mahoneys incorporated into the fold. Her open spirit and ready smile were an inspiration to us all, and there was always a place for you at her table.
Tina Mahoney is survived by her son Daniel V. Mahoney, son James J. Mahoney, daughter Kathleen M. Mahoney, son John E. Mahoney and his wife Danja Mahoney, and her 2 granddaughters, Bridget Mahoney and Julie Mahoney.
Her wake will be at John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Merrimack Street, North Andover, MA on Friday, October 4 from 4-7 p.m. Her funeral Mass at Saint Michael Church, 196 Main Street, North Andover, MA, Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10 am. Burial will be private and held at a later date.
