Marie Devine Brooks' Obituary
Marie Devine Brooks, was born on October 31,1938 in Lawrence, MA and passed away peacefully on February 15, 2020 at 81, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born Marie Ann Glynn, she was the daughter of Daniel and Ellen Glynn and grew up on Bailey Street. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School, attended Lesley College and Boston University and was the first in her family to earn a college degree. She was passionate about education and taught third grade in the city of Lawrence for 38 years, first at the Robert Frost School, and then at the Weatherbee School, until her retirement. She was an active member of The College Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She considered teaching to be her calling, not just her profession. She loved her students, and to this day is fondly remembered by many.
Beyond teaching, Marie’s greatest joy was her family. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother and her door was always open to anyone in need. At home a pot of tea and a sympathetic ear were always ready for friends and family, and the burdens shared at her kitchen table always lifted spirits. In early retirement she enjoyed traveling with her husband and close friends, and summers spent in Colorado. While Marie and her husband moved to Alpharetta, GA in 2006 to be close to family and get assistance with increasing health issues, she always considered North Andover “home”.
Marie is survived by her husband of 21 years, James Brooks; her daughter Kathleen Devine Wittschen, husband Lee, and their children Andrew and Caroline, of Alpharetta, GA; her daughter Ellen Devine Floyd of Alexandria,VA, her husband, and their children Lauren and Matthew; her sister-in-law Patricia Glynn; and special nephew and niece Daniel Glynn and Kelly Glynn -Thomas. Marie was preceded in death by her father Daniel F. Glynn Sr, her mother Ellen M. Glynn, her sister Catherine “Honey" Glynn and her brother Daniel F. Glynn, Jr.
Family, friends, and students who had “Mrs. Devine” are invited to attend a Mass to celebrate her life on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 10AM at St. Michael’s Church, 196 Main Street, North Andover. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her parents Daniel and Ellen and her sister Honey. She was loved beyond words and will be missed forever.
