John Robert O'Leary's Obituary
John Robert O’Leary, 85, of Andover, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, at Boston Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, John lived a life defined by service, laughter, and devotion to those he loved. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966 before beginning a distinguished career with the Andover Fire Department, where he dedicated himself to protecting and serving his community.
John was the beloved husband of Marianne Hebert, with whom he shared a loving marriage up until her passing. Together, they built a family that became the center of his world. He was a devoted and proud father to his daughter, Theresa, whose love and companionship brought him immense joy throughout his life. She was by his side until his last moments.
Known for his quick wit, playful sense of humor, and gentle spirit, John had a remarkable ability to make everyone around him smile. He was a natural jokester whose stories and one-liners could brighten any room. Beneath his humor was a kind, loving, and generous heart that touched countless lives.
John found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, taking them on deep-sea fishing trips and going on getaways to Lake George that created memories they will treasure forever. He enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and visits to casinos such as Encore and Foxwoods, relaxing by his pool on warm summer days, and spending time at the beach. One of his favorite traditions was the countless card nights spent at the Brady family’s home, where laughter, friendly competition, and good company were always in abundance.
There was nothing better than an infamous lunch date at Kitty’s for a salad and a round of Keno with him or a night out at the VFW where he was everyone’s “Uncle Jack”.
More than anything, John cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved being surrounded by his family and brought joy wherever he went. His granddaughters will forever remember his humor, his stories, and the way he could always make them laugh. His presence made every gathering brighter, and his love for his family was evident in everything he did.
John is survived by his loving daughter, Theresa, and her husband, Manuel Gutierrez; his beloved granddaughters, Tawni and her husband, Philip Goff, Lexi and her husband, Malcolm Novello, and Calli and her husband, Mark Hayward; his cherished great-grandchildren, Maxton, Myles, Calvin, Dominic, Maria, and Nina; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the Brady family, who welcomed him into their home and hearts. They shared countless card games, trips, laughter, and memories together, and their friendship, love, and companionship were a true blessing in his life.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at John Breen Memorial Funeral Home in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover, Massachusetts.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
John’s legacy of love, laughter, kindness, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the joy he brought to others will never be forgotten.
