Joan M. "Joanie" (Kane) (McWhorter) Seliger

Joan M. "Joanie" (Kane) (McWhorter) Seliger, 82, a resident of Amarillo, TX, formerly of Carmel and San Francisco, CA, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Born in Lawrence, MA, Joanie was a graduate of both St. Patrick's Grammar School and High School in Lawrence, class of 1948 of which she was Senior Class President. She went on to receive her Nursing Degree from St. John's School of Nursing in Lowell, MA. Joanie had worked as both a Stewardess and a Purser for Pan American World Airways in the 1960's and then went on to work as a Registered Nurse at the San Francisco General Hospital. An avid golfer, Joanie had belonged to various golf clubs in in the Bay Area including the Monterey Golf and Country Club and the San Francisco Golf Club. She was also a member of the Metropolitan Women's Club and the Women's Century Club. The daughter of the late John J. and Kathryn J. (Conley) Kane, and the widow of John McWhorter and Louis Seliger, family members include: a brother: Col. John P. Kane and his wife Nancy of Canton, GA, a sister: Mary D. Breen of Salem, NH, brother-in-laws: Col. Robert Flanagan (Ret.) from Augusta, ME, and Col. Eugene Flanagan (Ret.) from Columbus, OH., stepsons: Bruce McWhorter and his wife Katherine of Hull, MA, Kel Seliger and his wife Nancy of Amarillo, TX, Lane Seliger and his wife Kelli also of Amarillo, TX, stepdaughters: Laurie and her husband James Kehl of Oakland, CA, Bonnie and her husband Jeff Bertleson of Foster City, CA, Cindy and her husband Ken Mela of Sparks, NV, and Gwen MacMillan and her husband Jeff of Leawood, KS. Joanie is also survived by a godson: Jim O'Brien of Florida, as well as several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She is also survived by her special friend: Thomas Lowary of Pebble Beach, CA. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in Saints Mary and Joseph Parish at Mary Queen of Peace Church, 200 Lawrence Rd, Salem, NH. Burial will take place at a later date. Family and friends may call on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc.., 122 Amesbury St., Lawrence, MA.
