Jean L. Dumais' Obituary
Jean L. Dumais, 86, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, at her home.
Jean was born in Lawrence on August 30, 1939, to the late Louis C. and Rita M. (Arsenault) Proulx. She was educated in the Lawrence Schools, graduating from Lawrence High School.
Jean was the devoted mother of two sons and one daughter: Diane (Dumais, Cote) Mummaw, David John Dumais, and Jose Gabriel Gonzalez. She was the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Michael Cote; Samantha Yurcisin and her husband Aaron; Candace Cooper and her husband Matt and their daughter Cora; the late David Dumais Jr., whose wife Katlyn survives him along with their daughter Raya; Leah Putri and her wife Dina; Dylan Dumais; Joseph Gonzalez (Doucette) and his daughters Emma and Kara; Jared Gonzalez and his children Jamie, Alexander, and Jaden; as well as Jacoby Gonzalez, Alyssa Gonzalez, and Sabrina Gonzalez.
Born the first of twins, Jean shared a special lifelong bond with her twin sister, Joan Martin, who predeceased her. Joan’s husband, Leo Martin of North Andover, remains a cherished member of the extended family. Jean was also the sister of Claire Hannagan and her husband Robert of Florida, and Charles Proulx of Contoocook, New Hampshire, whose wife Carol also predeceased him. She is also predeceased by her grandson, David Dumais Jr.
Throughout her life, Jean worked in a variety of administrative roles. Before starting her family, she held a position at the Pentagon. Over the years, she also worked at Jo-Gal Shoe Factory, the Lawrence School Department, AAA, and Lawrence General Hospital, where she was a familiar and friendly voice on the switchboard.
Jean had a vibrant personality and a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life. She adored the color purple and fondly referred to her home at Diamond Spring Garden Apartments as her “Purple Penthouse.” She loved playing bingo, visiting the casino, and spending time playing cards with her family. Jean also enjoyed traveling, especially her many trips to Florida.
