James J. "Jim" Maloney's Obituary
James J. (Jim) Maloney of Methuen passed away peacefully on July 4th at Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center.
Jim was born on February 10,1931 to the late James & Ruth (Abbott) Maloney and grew up in Lawrence. He attended St. Rita's & St. Mary's grammar schools and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948. He was part of the second graduating class of 1952 from Merrimack College. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduating from college and spent three years in Germany.
He and his wife & family moved to Methuen in 1964. He was appointed to the position of Town Clerk in Methuen in 1974, and when Methuen adopted its present form of government his title changed to City Clerk. He retired in 1997. After retirement he worked at Hickory Hill Golf Course & Campbells Scottish Highlands. He and his wife spent many winters in Florida and continued playing golf there.
He was active in many organizations and served as President of the Mass. City Clerks Assoc.,
North Shore City & Town Clerks Assoc. Salem, Methuen Rotary Club, and Methuen Board of
Trade. Member of the Board of Directors of Henry C. Nevins Home, Member of the Methuen K of C Council 4027, Alumni Council of Merrimack College, St. Theresa's Parish Council, AOH, Improved Order of Redmen, American Legion and the Arlington Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, James & Ruth Maloney, his son, Raymond Cummings, his sister Ruth McLeod, brother William. He is survived by his wife Louise (Currier), daughter, Susan Cummings & her husband Kevin Duchene, grandchildren, Cheryl DeMarco, of Greenland, NH, Valerie Lemay & her husband Mark of Londonderry, NH and Eric Cummings & his significant other, Laura Cybert of Hyannis, four great-grandchildren, Patrick & Christian DeMarco, Keira & Austin Lemay and daughter-in-law Linda Cummings of Hudson, NH. Many nieces, nephews, and sister-in-law.
Calling hours are on Monday July 10 from 3-6pm at John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Amesbury St., Lawrence and a mass on Tuesday at St. Lucy Church in Methuen at 11:00 am. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.
Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery immediately following the mass.
