James R. Hennessey's Obituary
James R. Hennessey, 84, of Epping, NH, formerly of Lawrence and Methuen, MA, passed away following a brief and unexpected illness.
Born in Methuen to Daniel and Anne Marie (Byrne) Hennessey, he attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School and graduated from Lawrence High School. He was an identical twin to his brother Daniel, who predeceased him, along with siblings Marilyn Hennessey Goudreau and Philip Hennessey. He is survived by his sister Annmarie Hennessey McPhee of Nevada.
Jim spent much of his life rooted in the Merrimack Valley, raising his family in Methuen before later embracing a new chapter in New Hampshire.
He was the beloved husband of Priscilla Morin Hennessey, and a devoted father to his daughter, Michelle Hennessey of Epping, NH, and his son, Darren Hennessey of Kansas City, Missouri. While he had no grandchildren, Jim was adored by his three golden retrievers—Houdini, Coco, and Pretzel—who were constant companions and brought him great joy.
Jim dedicated 47 years of his career to the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, beginning right out of high school. Over more than four decades, he built a respected career in auto advertising sales, forming lasting relationships and becoming a familiar and trusted presence throughout the community.
He proudly served his country in the Air Force Reserves, where he worked in the Motor Pool, and was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis—an experience he carried with pride throughout his life. Earlier in life, he was also an Eagle Scout, a reflection of the values of service and integrity that guided him.
Jim was deeply involved in his community through the Greater Lawrence Kiwanis Club, where he served in many roles, including President. Through his work with Kiwanis, he was especially proud to support the Boys & Girls Club of the Merrimack Valley.
He had an abiding fascination with submarines and all things Navy, a passion fueled by his close friendship with fellow Kiwanian, Captain George L. Street III, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Captain of the USS Tirante. While Jim did not serve in World War II, he was honored to be included among Captain Street’s group of WWII veterans at their annual gatherings, where he shared in their camaraderie and helped support their continued connection—often driving Captain Street to Navy events.
In addition to his primary career, Jim built a second legacy as a wedding photographer, spending countless weekends capturing the joy of hundreds of couples on their wedding days—preserving moments that will live on for generations.
Jim will be remembered for his steady presence, his deep dedication to his family, his commitment to his community, and the pride he took in both his work and the people he loved. His life touched many, and his legacy will live on in the memories he created and the relationships he nurtured.
