Elizabeth A. (Curran) Cuddy's Obituary
Surrounded by her loving family, Elizabeth A. (Curran) Cuddy, 77, passed away at Lawrence General Hospital on April 7, 2018 after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer.
She was born August 23, 1940 in Lawrence, MA to the late James and Elizabeth Curran. Betty was a 1958 graduate of Saint Patrick High School, Lawrence, MA. She was a lifelong parishioner of Saint Patrick Church. Based on her commitment to serving her church community, Elizabeth was awarded the 2018 Richard Cardinal Cushing Award from the Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She held leadership roles in several organizations: Our Lady Sodality, Moving On Group, and various ministries at Saint Patrick Parish, a place she lovingly called home.
Elizabeth’s dedication to Family, Faith, and Friends is her lasting legacy. These core values will forever live in the hearts of all those who had the great honor of knowing her. Family and friends will never forget the warmth of walking into “Ma’s” house— a smile, a hug, a jar of M&Ms, and cookies waiting to greet them upon entering. Elizabeth was “Ma” to all who knew her, helping raise over 100 children. She will be forever remembered pushing a stroller around the city, with happy children holding her hand as they crossed the street.
She was predeceased by her late husband James A. Cuddy in 1988 and her infant son James Cuddy.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Edward E. Viel, Sr. whom she married in 2003.
Her sons John and wife Kathy, Daniel and wife Coleen, Thomas and wife Sheila, her daughters Susan and husband Joseph Couture, Maryellen and husband Paul Maccarone, and Colleen Dolan and Albert Abraham.
Grandchildren Brittany Cowen and husband Craig, Jonathan Couture, Elizabeth Colella and husband Justin, Benjamin Maccarone, Kelsea Lussier and husband Michael, Brian Dolan and Megan, and Alyssa, Jimmy, Tommy Jr., and Rose Cuddy.
Great Grandchildren Joseph, Jaxon, and Jace Cowen, Michael, Ella, Brian, and Jade Dolan, and Julia, Anthony, and Michael Millar.
Her brothers James Curran, Thomas Curran, and Edward and wife Ellen Curran. Her sisters Margaret Degnan Reid, Mary Ellen and husband John Anton, and Regina and husband William McCann. Her in-laws Michael Nevins, Joseph Cuddy and his wife Margaret, Lynda Cuddy, and Nancy Cuddy.
As well as several nieces and nephews and treasured, lifelong friends.
She was also predeceased by her sister Patricia Nevins and in laws John Cuddy, William Cuddy, and Gerald Cuddy.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to call on Thursday, April 12, 2018 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Saint Patrick Church, 118 South Broadway, Lawrence, MA. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Patrick Church, 118 South Broadway, Lawrence, MA. Her family is requesting that loved ones gather at Saint Patrick Church at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
