Maria (Tammaro) Gilmore

November 24, 1923 - August 22, 2020

Mrs. Maria (Tammaro) Gilmore, 96, of Lawrence, Massachusetts passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, August 22nd, 2020 at her home. She was born in Miano (Naples) Italy on November 24, 1923, daughter of the late Raffaele and Filomina (Grillo) Tammaro. Maria attended School in Naples Italy for early childhood education. During WWII Maria worked at the U.S. Airforce Base in Naples Italy as a transcriber. That is where she met her soon- to- be husband, Joseph. After the war they came to the Greater Lawrence Area where she was one of the first WWII war brides. After leaving Italy she made many close friends to whom she considered to be like family. They raised their family here in the Great Lawrence Area. A very devoted wife and mother, she also worked as a home health aide for many years as she so loved helping others. Religion was an important part of Maria’s life. She was a devout Roman Catholic attending St. Lucy’s Church in Methuen. She was a member of the Ladies Sodality of St. Lucy’s Parish, where she loved being a part of all the church’s affairs. She loved to pass time by knitting and crocheting all kinds of items for her family and extended family. She treasured all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love ran deep for her entire family including cousins, nieces and nephews in Italy. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years, Joseph J. Gilmore. She was also predeceased by her parents, Raffaele and Filomina (Grillo) Tammaro, and her brothers, Domenico and Antonio Tammaro, and her niece, Tammara Giordano. Her family members include her sons Ralph Gilmore and his wife, Susan Sherman, of Amherst, MA; Joseph A. Gilmore and his wife, Elizabeth, of Methuen; Michael Gilmore and his wife, Dawn, of Methuen; and her daughters Anna-Maria Cozzone and her husband, Adolfo, of Derry, NH, and Rita Goulet and her husband, Paul, of Derry, NH. Maria had ten grandchildren: Jeffrey Gilmore; Melissa Gilmore and her partner, Eddy Cartegena; Andrew Gilmore; Thomas Gilmore and his wife, Bethany; Patrizia (Cozzone) Pelham and her husband, Aaron; Laura Cozzone and her fiancée, Tania Dominguez ; Christina Cozzone and her fiancé, Michael Abelson; Daniel Goulet and his wife, Callahan; Sarah (Goulet) Bissonnette and her husband, Jason; Faith Gilmore and her husband, Gerard Libby. Maria has six great-grandchildren: Thomas and Benjamin Gilmore; Oliver and Charles Gilmore; Jack Cartegena; Brynn Goulet. Maria is also survived by her cousin Marisa and great-niece, Antonella and great-nephew, Nanni and their families. Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 27th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Lucy's Church in Methuen, MA. Wake and Interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Merrimack Street, No. Andover, MA.
