Edwin D. Hurlbut

Edwin D. Hurlbut died November 7th in North Andover, MA at the age of 98. Edwin was born on June 19,1920 in Le Roy, MN to George and Eva Hurlbut. After graduating as valedictorian of Le Roy High School in 1938, he attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1943. Throughout his life he cherished his days at St. Olaf and has established a St. Olaf scholarship for graduates of Le Roy High School. After college he joined the Navy and entered the Officer’s Training program at Columbia University in New York. Prior to his deployment to Japan he was admitted to the Naval Supply Corps School at Harvard Business School. In all, he served from August 1943 to October 1946. While in Boston at Harvard he met his future wife Marilynn Louise Jenkins and they were married in Mare Island, CA when he returned to the States in 1946. They had three children, Edwin Jr. (Ted), Randall, and Margo. Following Lynn’s death in 1971 Edwin had two subsequent marriages. Edwin enjoyed a successful career in finance at General Radio, Concord, MA, first as an accountant and ultimately as the Controller. He retired from GenRad in 1979. In retirement he split his time between his homes in Harwich, MA and Palm City, FL. A lifelong lover of big band and jazz music, Ed continued to dance into his 90s and enjoyed jazz cruises and any concert he could attend. Throughout his retirement golfing was another hobby that he enjoyed. At 90 he moved from Florida to North Andover, MA to be closer to family. Ed is survived by his daughter Margo and her husband Scott Hanson of Carlisle, MA and their two children Nick and Vera Hanson. He is also survived by Ted’s children, Katie and Jimmy Hurlbut. Edwin will be interred with Lynn, Ted and Randy at the Newton Cemetery in Newton, MA. In Marilynn’s memory donations can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
